Part of the responsibility that comes from owning a gun is keeping that gun safe from family members that don't need to have contact with it and others (criminals) that might have an interest in it. On the other hand, you have a gun that can help you keep your family safe in your own home but that gun can't keep you safe unless it is at hand and functional when you need it.

Gun safety really just boils down to common sense and education. You don't want your kids to have unsupervised contact with, or access to, your gun(s). They will not understand why unless you educate them.

 1. Keep Your Guns Safe
  • Keep your guns out of reach of your children.
  • Do not keep your guns loaded unless you can secure them under lock and key that only you control.
  • Keep your gun(s) accessible if you intend them to be useful for self defense. There are plenty of methods to secure your guns and still keep them accessible in times of need.
 2. Educate your children, at an early age, about guns.
  • Never point a gun at a person.
  • When you pick up a gun the first thing you do is check to see if it unloaded.
  • Never place your finger on the trigger until you are ready to fire.
  • Always know what is behind your target and don't shoot unless and until you do.
 3. Keep your guns clean and in operating order
  • It does not matter if you have a gun if it won't operate.
  • Learn how to clean your gun.
  • Clean your gun after you use it
 4. Understand your gun and know how to operate your gun
  • There are many different types of guns and not all guns are suitable for all people. Some guns are more difficult to operate than others or may require more knowledge to operate safely.
  • If you can't operate your gun it can't help you.
  • Using and firing a gun takes practice. Take your gun to the range and shoot it.
  • If you need lessons take a firearm class
 5. Don't travel with a loaded gun
 6. Make sure you have the appropriate license, permits and training to safely and legally transport and operate a firearm
