Alabama Point Print

Alabama Point is a great beach dive and on of the last Alabama beach dive sites as you head east into Florida. Alabama Point at Perdido Pass, where Perdido Bay enters the gulf of mexico. You should be aware this area is subject to a huge amount of boat traffic and is affected by tidal currents. This means, if you plan to dive the pass do it at the end of high tide. There is less problem with currents and visibility will probably be better.

You can dive both the east and west sides of the pass. Parking is great on the west side but you may have to fight the fisherman and you need to plan ahead since you will make an entry jumping off the sea wall and there are no ladders to get out of the water.

A better choice is the east side of the pass along the rock jetties. You'll have a little hike across the sand from the parking area and there is a little swim to the jetties since a portion of the rock wall was washed away several hurricanes ago. Along the jetties you'll find a huge variety of marine life. Growing up, this was a favorite dive site because, with the right timing, you could take wash tubs of flounder home after the dive.

The latest word, as of August, 2008, is the rock jetties on the east side are being replaced. This will greatly improve access to the deep rock wall that extends into the pass. No word on the expected completion date of the jetty renewal but we'll keep you posted.

Remember, a dive flag is required in Alabama.
