On April 7, 1932, Walter and Bessie Bellingrath opened their garden estate to the people of Mobile for a day during the height of azalea season. During the 75th anniversary year of the Gardens opening, Bellingrath Gardens and Home celebrates the future of the "Charm Spot of the Deep South," as well as the lives of its founders.

According to former racer, Gene Tapia, the idea of a paved track in the Mobile area was conceived by a group from Pensacola, known as “The Dust Busters.” Five Flags Speedway had opened in 1953, and hosted one NASCAR race that year.
