On April 7, 1932, Walter and Bessie Bellingrath opened their garden estate to the people of Mobile for a day during the height of azalea season. During the 75th anniversary year of the Gardens opening, Bellingrath Gardens and Home celebrates the future of the "Charm Spot of the Deep South," as well as the lives of its founders. We began our official 75th Anniversary Celebration with a commemorative ribbon cutting ceremony and 1930s style Garden party.

Historic Mobile Preservation Society was founded in 1935 as a grassroots membership group dedicated to preserving the tangible links to the past for the benefit of present and future generations. HMPS's mission includes curating the Oakleigh Historic Complex, a 19th-century museum and archives campus in the heart of one of Mobile's most beautiful historic districts.

According to former racer, Gene Tapia, the idea of a paved track in the Mobile area was conceived by a group from Pensacola, known as “The Dust Busters.” Five Flags Speedway had opened in 1953, and hosted one NASCAR race that year. The sixth-tenth mile Lakeview Speedway on Lott Road, near Mobile, had shut down about the time Five Flags Speedway opened, and drivers would have to travel the two-lane road to Pensacola.
